At Askern Littlemoor, we are proud to offer a rich and practical Life Skills Curriculum designed to equip children with the essential skills they need for everyday life. Our approach helps pupils grow into confident, capable and independent young learners who understand how the world around them works.
Throughout the year, the children explore three key life skills themes:
In the autumn term, children learn about the basic skills that help them become more independent. This includes understanding personal organisation, looking after their belongings, helping at home, simple food preparation, recognising everyday safety rules and developing early self‑care routines. Pupils take part in hands-on activities that build confidence and encourage responsibility.
During the spring term, our focus shifts to developing healthy habits. Children learn about making positive choices, caring for their bodies and minds, hygiene routines, kindness, friendships and emotional regulation. They engage in activities such as preparing healthy snacks, completing wellbeing challenges, practising mindfulness, understanding the importance of exercise and learning strategies to look after themselves and others.
In the summer term, children begin to explore life beyond the school gates. They learn about their community, the roles of different people who help us, staying safe outdoors, basic money skills and understanding simple maps and routes. Pupils take part in real-life learning opportunities such as local walks, community visits and practical problem-solving tasks.
At the end of each half term, all children take part in a Life Skills Activity Day. These special days allow pupils to apply what they have learnt through fun, practical experiences such as:
These activities help children build confidence, resilience and independence in meaningful and memorable ways.
To inspire children and broaden their horizons, we also hold Careers Days throughout the year. During these events, pupils learn about a wide range of jobs and discover the different skills people use in their work.
We regularly welcome visitors into school who talk about their careers and demonstrate their roles. So far this year, we have been fortunate to meet:
These sessions spark curiosity, encourage ambition and help pupils understand how learning in school links to real-life opportunities.
