Intent
At Askern Littlemoor, our intent is to deliver a Physical Education (PE) curriculum that inspires a lifelong love of movement, health, and active living. We aim to provide all children with a broad and balanced range of physical experiences that develop fundamental movement skills such as agility, balance, and coordination, while also fostering confidence, resilience, and teamwork.
Through engaging and inclusive lessons, children are encouraged to explore, experiment, and challenge themselves within a safe and supportive environment. We place a strong emphasis on developing positive attitudes towards physical activity, promoting both physical and mental wellbeing.
By the end of Key Stage 1, children will have built a solid foundation of skills, knowledge, and enthusiasm that prepares them for continued participation in sport and physical activity throughout their lives.
Physical Education not only improves physical health but also supports mental wellbeing, reduces stress, and enhances concentration. A well-balanced PE curriculum enables pupils to develop self-esteem and build confidence, both within the subject and as individuals. Physical activity also has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability, and the development of relationships with others. Therefore, it is vital that the curriculum is relevant and accessible for all staff to deliver with confidence.
PE is much more than just the physical. At Askern Littlemoor, we have adopted the “Your PE” curriculum, which is built around the core principles of Head, Hand, and Heart.
PE is taught twice weekly.
Implementation
The PE curriculum is structured into units, beginning with the development of core fundamental skills in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and progressing into more sport-specific skills in Key Stage 1. To ensure progression and coherence, lessons within each unit are taught in sequence. While the units themselves do not need to be delivered in a set order across the year, our long-term planning carefully considers key concepts and how skills transfer between units, creating a cohesive and progressive curriculum.
See our PE Overview in the document below for the long-term PE planning.
External Support
Through our partnership with Activ8 Coaching, all staff have the opportunity to work alongside a PE specialist to further develop their subject knowledge and delivery. This support is delivered on a rolling programme, providing opportunities for observation, team teaching, and independent teaching by the class teacher.
Our PE curriculum at Littlemoor is designed to be fully inclusive, ensuring that all children, regardless of age or ability, have opportunities to participate and succeed. We aim to provide a wide range of experiences that support both personal development and participation in competitive sport, whether within school or against other schools. Through our partnership with Leger Sport, pupils are able to access a broad range of traditional sports, including football, tag rugby, athletics and cricket, as well as activities such as netball and dodgeball. In addition, we offer a variety of sport-based after-school clubs, including football, dance, gymnastics, and cheerleading. Throughout the year, children are also given opportunities to represent the school by attending festivals and competitions, allowing them to apply their skills in a competitive and supportive environment.
