Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It applies to everyone in Britain and exists to protect people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. This means that everyone is legally protected and should be treated fairly and with respect.

The Act recognises that we all have characteristics that make us who we are. Some of these are protected in law to ensure people are not treated unfairly because of them.

The Nine Protected Characteristics

Under the Equality Act, the protected characteristics are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Pregnancy and maternity

Our Approach at Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy

At Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy, we actively promote understanding and respect for these protected characteristics in age‑appropriate ways. This is embedded throughout our curriculum, particularly within RSHE, and is reflected in our school values, collective worship, and the books and stories we share with children.

We aim to help pupils develop kindness, respect and understanding of difference, supporting them to grow into confident and compassionate members of society.

Protection Under the Equality Act

The Equality Act protects individuals from discrimination in many areas of everyday life, including:

  • In the workplace
  • In education and healthcare settings
  • When using shops, restaurants and other services
  • When travelling or using transport
  • When joining clubs or organisations
  • When dealing with public bodies such as local councils or government departments
