History

History Intent

At Askern Littlemoor Infant Academy, we aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past and help them develop an understanding of how people, events and changes have shaped the world we live in today. In our infant school, History enables children to begin to make sense of their own lives, their families and the wider world by exploring events and people from the past.

Through our History curriculum, pupils develop an awareness of the past through stories, artefacts, photographs and discussion. They learn to recognise how life has changed over time and begin to understand that different people may have experienced events in different ways. By exploring significant individuals, events and everyday life in the past, pupils develop an appreciation of how History shapes identities, cultures and communities.

Our curriculum is supported by the scheme of work from Kapow Primary, which encourages pupils to become curious and analytical thinkers who begin to think like historians. Through this approach, pupils learn to ask questions, explore evidence and develop simple interpretations of the past. Learning experiences help pupils build an understanding of chronology, recognise change over time and begin to compare past and present.

The curriculum is carefully designed to be both accessible and ambitious, enabling all pupils to develop secure historical knowledge, vocabulary and enquiry skills. Through engaging learning experiences, pupils begin to understand how the past influences the present and develop the foundations to become thoughtful and informed citizens.
